If you're a parent, caregiver, relative
or friend of a child with Cerebral Palsy
Please Read And Spread The Word...
Monday, June 6th, 2005 will be a historic day for the hundreds of thousands of children and their families impacted by Cerebral Palsy and we need your help. June 6th is the day we will "raise our voices" as a group in a national letter writing effort to the US Congress and make ourselves heard over the lack of Cerebral Palsy research. We can't afford to be silent anymore and let children with CP be forgotten. We need to speak up and let our lawmakers know why we need cerebral palsy research and what we are asking for.
All over the country, parents, family members, caregivers and neighbors are mobilizing to join in this letter-writing effort. Since you either attended the 1st Annual CP Parent Conference in Atlanta, Georgia on April 16th or have expressed an interest in helping advance the cause of cerebral palsy research, we invite you to join with us. We know the timing is right for this effort. Our lawmakers are waiting to hear us speak up as a group for these very special children.
We are targeting specific members of the 1) US Senate Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, and 2) the US House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies. The members of these two powerful committees cover 36 states and control funding to the CDC (Centers of Disease Control) and other organizations that can make a positive impact on Cerebral Palsy research. Please visit www.reachingforthestars.org to see a complete list of these committee members and their direct contact information.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Through the wonders of technology and some very helpful volunteers, we will be able to mass distribute the letter below via email and fax on the morning of June 6th. To make the biggest impact, our goal is to send as many letters as possible between the hours of 9 and 11am. This letter will be personalized to the correct Senator and/or Congressman for each state and personalized from the specific constituent sending it (hopefully you!).
- To participate, all you have to do is respond to this email with a "yes" and your name and address (street, city, state, zip) by June 2nd. We'll take care of all the rest! You don't have to do anything else - no emailing or faxing necessary on your part. (No name or address will be used for any other purpose than this letter-writing effort).
- We need to make the biggest impact possible so if you know of anyone from your family, down the block, in your place of work, or in another state who would be willing to lend a hand by lending their name, please send their name and address through to us at email@example.com...or simply reply to this email by June 2nd.
- If you would rather send a letter yourself or would like to personalize it in some way to add a note that you are a parent, grandparent, friend of a child with cerebral palsy then you can FAX or email a letter (sample below) to the Congressional members from your state listed on our website. Sounds like a lot of faxing, but to improve our children's health, it's not much.
Your faxes and emails really do make a difference. Please let your voices be heard.
- If you do NOT have a fax machine, and want to have a different or modified letter sent, please send it to firstname.lastname@example.org along with your street address, city and state by June 2nd and we will be happy to take care of faxing and emailing it for you.
You can also CALL specific members of Congress (the phone numbers are listed on our website as well www.reachingforthestars.org).
Why might you want to follow up with a phone call? There are over 5,000 bills that have been introduced in the Congress. There simply is not the time to review in detail all of these bills. There are hundreds (if not more than 1,000) health care related bills introduced in the Congress every year and a member usually has only one staffer partially dedicated to working on health care issues.
Please join us on our journey of hope and change. Thank you!
