Like many of the parents who have a child with Cerebral Palsy regularly deal with, we’re spending the summer recovering and rehabbing from a child’s orthopedic surgery. Also like you, we continue to search for effective surgeries, therapies, new treatments, new hope. Traveling near and far. Collaborating. Investigating. This is the reason RFTS, Inc. was founded – to be on the forefront of bringing hope to our families through effective advocacy, parent education and support for the most promising CP research opportunities for new treatments, prevention and yes…ultimately a cure for CP.
To this end, we are embarking on several exciting new pediatric CP research projects with leading medical professionals and scientists around the country. We are involved with the NIH, CDC, AACPDM, and are actively investigating various stem cell therapies and what might hold the most promise for children with CP through a global group of leading scientists working with a variety of animal models around the world.
Recently we’ve been asked by some parents why we aren’t funding specific stem cell studies directly. We put this question to our esteemed Medical Advisory Board made up of the leading pediatric Cerebral Palsy physicians, therapists and scientists in the U.S. Without exception, our Medical Advisory Board feels at this point, our strength and impact is in going after the “bigger fish”. What does that mean? The “bigger fish” are utilizing our parent strength around the country to push for federally funded national CP research at both the CDC and NIH. This is where we can be most effective right now. Our efforts can result in millions of dollars for CP research instead of thousands for a single study or two that actually require several million. We have refined our focus on this goal and as a result have finalized our plans to “Storm the Hill” heading to Washington DC in conjunction with the AACPDM in September of this year.
Soon we will be calling on parents in key states to who are interested in helping with this effort. In the meantime, we want to thank you for all of your support – both financial and in person. Whether it be attending a conference, a fundraiser, one of CDC awareness days, writing letters, participating in one of our chapter events etc. It’s because of your efforts, that we are where we are today. We thank you and are deeply grateful for your efforts on behalf of all the children with Cerebral Palsy we are fighting for.
Special thanks go out to the amazing families in Cedar Rapids, Iowa who planned and organized the “Laugh Yourself Blue” Reaching For The Stars fundraiser recently, featuring comedian, Josh Blue. Thanks to the efforts of Kristi Trotter, Michael Kutcher and scores of others, the event netted over $40,000 and was a sold out success!! Everyone had a blast for a great cause.
